If you received utility bill assistance through LIHEAP* and moved before you used all of your bill credit, we will take the following steps:
- Sometimes, when you move to a new address but you have the same utility company, the utility company will transfer your unused balance to your new account. In this case, there is nothing more that needs to be done until you apply next year and give us your new account number and address.
- When you move and switch companies or if your utility company does not transfer your credit to your new account, we have to wait for the utility company to refund the money to Community Action.
- Once we receive the refund, we will attempt to find you so we can apply your refund to your utility costs at your new address. Sometimes it is difficult to find someone who has moved, so we recommend starting a conversation to tell us your new address so we can make a note in your file.
- Because of the process involved, it can take two months or more for an unused LIHEAP credit to be transferred. Please pay your utility bill at your new address until you see the credit on your account. If you cannot afford your utility bills while you are waiting, please call your utility company or start a conversation to see if we can help you.
